Automation feels like progress.
Belts, loaders, auto-crafters, pumps, and smart storage make the base look advanced and make the player feel efficient. Sometimes that feeling is correct. Often it is premature.

I have watched more runs stall from early automation than from late automation. The systems that are supposed to save time end up consuming it — in setup, in debugging, in material cost, and in the attention required to keep them from backing up or idling.

Here’s the practical filter I use.

Automation is worth it when most of these are true

  • The manual loop it replaces is already stable and repetitive. You have run the same gather → process → store cycle enough times that the steps are boring rather than still being optimized.

  • The time cost of setup will be paid back inside the current progression window. If the automation takes forty minutes to build and debug, it needs to save meaningful time before the next major biome or gear check — not someday in the endgame.

  • The input supply is reliable. Automating a process that still has spotty or long-distance resource delivery just creates a more complicated way to watch machines wait for materials.

  • Failure is cheap and visible. When the system jams or runs dry, you notice quickly and can fix it without a long scavenger hunt through half the base.

  • You have the material surplus to build it without delaying a higher-leverage upgrade. If the belts and loaders eat the plates or components you still need for the next tool tier or station, the automation is competing with real progress.

When the majority of those conditions line up, automate. The return is real.

Automation is usually a distraction when

  • You are still in the first major tool or station tier and the manual loop is not yet consistent.

  • You are automating a process whose output volume is not actually limiting you.

  • The setup requires rare or expensive components that would otherwise accelerate combat readiness, mobility, or a key unlock.

  • You do not yet have a clean manual version of the same chain. Automating a messy process usually produces a messy automated process.

  • The main reason you want it is that it looks cool or “feels like the mid-game.”

That last one is the most common trap. Aesthetic progress is not the same as actual tempo.

A simple decision test

Before you start laying belts or placing auto-crafters, ask:

  1. What exact manual step am I removing?

  2. How many times per hour do I currently perform that step?

  3. How long will setup and troubleshooting take?

  4. What higher-priority craft or upgrade am I postponing to build this?

If you cannot answer the first two clearly, or if the answer to the fourth is something important, stop. Put the automation materials back into the next real upgrade.

Practical timing guideline

  • Very early game: Almost never. Focus on tool quality, basic stations, and short manual loops.

  • Once core stations and a stable food/resource loop exist: Selective automation of the highest-frequency, most annoying steps.

  • After the first real biome or gear check: Broader automation becomes much more reasonable because the material base and the need for volume are both higher.

There are exceptions — some games gate progression behind automated systems — but the default bias should be toward later rather than earlier.

Bottom line

Automation is a multiplier, not a foundation.
It multiplies whatever loop you already have. If that loop is clean and the volume matters, the multiplier is powerful. If the loop is still changing or the volume is low, you mostly multiply complexity.

Build the manual version first. Make it short and reliable. Only then decide whether the remaining friction is worth the cost of removing it with machines.

The runs that feel smoothest are rarely the ones that automated earliest. They are the ones that automated at the moment the manual work actually became the bottleneck.
